LAWRENCE AZERRAD is a Los Angeles-based Grammy-nominated graphic designer and creative director and founder of LADdesign, which has created graphic design and comprehensive visual identity systems for clients such as Sting, Universal Music Group, Blue Note Records, The Silversun Pickups, Esperanza Spalding, WeTransfer, and Wilco. Azerrad was also creative director for the Voyager Golden Record 40th anniversary edition.

Lawrence is most recently known for the incredibly stylishly illustrated book on the Concorde which looks back at the future of air travel and is as sleek and elegant as the Concorde aircraft it celebrates. When the first commercial Concordes zoomed off the runways in Paris and London in the late 1960s, crossing the Atlantic in just under three hours, they established a new standard for luxury flight. Powered by 38,000 pounds of thrust and easily recognizable with its delta wing and drooping nose, the Concorde jet embodied the pinnacle of aviation technology and industrial design. It quickly became the preferred mode of transatlantic flight for superstars and business moguls alike.

His work is inspiring to say the least and so is his collection of work which you can find on Laddesign.net.  Let’s learn some more about this creative genius and get inspired.

Where are you from originally? If you aren’t from Los Angeles what brought you here?

I’m a proud Los Angeles native!

Worst advice you’ve ever received and why?

I have a hard time remembering bad advice, I try to forget it once I realize that it’s bad.

Best advice you’ve ever received and why?

Be present, and follow-through. Because your actions now set the stage for tomorrow.

Best advice you’ve given that had a positive impact and the person shared it with you?

I’ve had interns work in my studio, I’ve taught a bit, and have given some lectures on design and creativity. It’s most fulfilling at the end of any of those when someone shares that the internship, lecture, class was inspiring. That’s all I wish to do with my work, inspire others and make the world a little better through creative experiences.

Biggest hurdles and how you overcame them and the lessons learned through the challenges.

I got my start making album covers in the music industry in an era before music streaming. Quickly, the role of an album cover designer changed, along with billable rates. I had to realize that the future that I had expected wasn’t going to align with reality and that I had to adapt. Today my studio still does work in the music industry, but we also work with cultural and educational institutions.

A time you almost gave up and how you got through it and didn’t give up?

It took me over 10 years to land a publishing deal for my book “Supersonic, The Design and Lifestyle of Concorde” I practically did give up. But I didn’t completely. I kept working on ways to follow through, make the project a reality. Today the book is out, we’re in our second printing, and I’ve had the joy of lecturing on the topic across the U.S., U.K., and Paris.

If you weren’t doing the work you are doing, what else would you be doing & why?

Honestly, I can’t imagine doing any other work than what I’m doing. I love my work, my practice, and the projects we work on.

Most important people in your journey and how they affected your life up until now?

My Wife. No question. There are so many ways she has made me a better person, a better professional, a better creative. I owe much of my success to her insight and her patience.

What advice you’d give to the 18-year-old you?

Remain dedicated. Nothing is given to you. Work hard and stay humble, no matter any measure of success and talent. We all have to do our best in this world.

Do you have a mentor? If so, who is he/she?

Sister Corita Kent and Charles and Ray Eames are creative role models to me. Mostly for their innovation and dedication. They all passed away before I became a creative professional, but I admire them.

Do you do any philanthropic work in LA or have in the past?

I’ve donated design services to non profits

If so, what non profits do you work with and why?

Heal The Bay, UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, for their work in making the world a better place

What are some of the most touching experiences you’ve had while doing work with those nonprofits/organizations?

Seeing the way design can be used as a cause for good

How would you like to be remembered?

A good person

A hidden talent nobody knows…yet. 🙂

I make a good pizza. It’s not totally hidden to some of our houseguests.

Favorite Book

I honestly can’t pick one, books are my primary source of inspiration.

I wish they had a 6 star rating!  At JB Clothiers, they are not only good at what they do, they are also very good people. I highly recommend. I needed to get a suit fitted last minute. My son was very excited to attend his senior prom. The prom was on a Saturday. He tried his suit on Thursday night and I realized it didn’t fit right at all. It seemed he had grown physically overnight! His new suit, not even 3 months old, didn’t fit right.  This is where JB Clothiers saved the day! I reached out to Jerry to let him know how important this was to my son (and I). I wanted him to look his best for his prom (and his new girl) Jerry said “don’t worry we got you”.
We bought the suit on Friday after school, took it straight downtown to Jerry. They stayed open late for us and fixed the suit overnight!! They even asked us to come Saturday morning for any last minute adjustments. What else can I say!  Thanks Jerry, you are a good man and JB Clothiers is an extension of your caring personalty….”

“I’ve been meaning to write this review for a while (after getting married in October of 2018) but even without the review, I’ve been telling anyone I know that Jerry is prepared to make you look and feel your best.  DO NOT go here unless you are fully willing to accept the fact that all other off the rack suits are going to look like absolute garbage on you after you’ve received a bespoke suit from Jerry. Jerry’s suits, fit and finish wise, absolutely destroy anything else you’ve got in your closet (so just be prepared to need another suit or jacket from him).   Jerry made the whole process super easy and having complete trust in him to make me look my best was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.  I will be buying more from JB Clothiers in the future. I am a customer for life now.  Thanks again!”

I recently had a bespoke tuxedo made for the Oscars 2019 and was so impressed with the terrific service and attention to detail here.  While parking downtown leaves a lot to be desired, it’s worth it to have Jerry do your tailoring…he had books upon books of fabrics, walked me through the different options (both quality and pricing), explained different styles and was open and honest regarding advantages to certain looks vs. others.  I felt like I had a tailor, stylist, and accountant all in one!  The turnaround during the busy Oscar season was very reasonable, it only took a few weeks and our tuxedos were delivered as promised on the date we agreed on.  There was a fitting and other minor adjustments which he did quickly and the end result was really impressive.  It makes such a difference to wear a custom made tuxedo.  No baggy pants…no ill-fitting shirts…no jackets that crease in weird places…I could even see myself getting another one soon in a midnight blue now that I have traditional black (Jerry keeps all your measurements on file so you don’t ever have to go back for another fitting if you don’t want to).

Several months ago I decided to invest in my first bespoke suit for my wedding.  After researching my options, my decision led me to Jerry at JB Clothier.  Jerry is an amazing tailor and a top-notch professional.  He guided this novice through the selection process, provided suggestions and took an abundant amount of measurements.  After six weeks passed, he presented me with my personal master-piece. He initially asked me what I was envisioning and then turned it into a reality.  We looked through the fabric selection, suit lining, customization options and more.  I highly recommend getting a custom dress shirt made.  That was a game changer.  Jerry created a beautiful white herringbone dress shirt with french cuffs.  He also personalized my suit jacket, pants, and dress shirts with my initials, which was a nice touch. You are in great hands with Jerry.  This is one investment that you should not feel guilty to indulge in.  A great suit can go a long way and leave a lasting impression.  Thanks Jerry!  I’ll be back for my next session soon.
