Eric Cruz is a highly respected Jiu-Jitsu instructor who has inspired many with his grounded personality, hard work, dedication, and soft-spoken strength. As the co-owner of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu in Pasadena CA, Eric has created a safe space for men, women, and children to learn Jiu-Jitsu, get fit and strong both mentally and physically. Eric and his wife Lila are dedicated to teaching people how to defend themselves and find the power within. While most of the students are adults, Eric, Lila and their team are always working on fun ways to engage kids and inspire them to learn not only Jiu-Jitsu but both physical and emotional strength. As with most interviews, we learned a lot about what has guided Eric along his journey and the things that inspire and motivate him today.
Where are you originally from?
My family is Puerto Rican but I was born in the Bronx.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
Trust your gut! Even if you’re wrong you only have yourself to blame.
What’s the worst advice you’ve ever received?
Finish it tomorrow. Literally, the worst thing you can do is procrastinate because if you leave it to tomorrow you many never get the chance.
Best advice you give?
Pursue what makes you happy, everything else will find its place.
The biggest hurdle in your life and how you overcame it.
I’ve had many challenging experiences as have most of us but regardless of the hurdles, I always trust myself and keep trying. Trust yourself to fail and keep trying again and again. Knowing that the perfect moment really doesn’t exist helps you learn tenacity and resilience.
Was there a time that you almost gave up but didn’t?
During my 3rd MMA fight, where I spent most of the first round being punched in the head against the floor. I almost gave up but instead, I didn’t and was able to get on top, secure a choke and win in the final seconds of the first round. Talk about a serious comeback and a quick lesson learned. Never Ever Give Up!.
If you weren’t running 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, what else would you be doing?
I’d probably be in some kind of political or social justice work because I love giving and helping people.
The most important person in your life growing up?
My brother! He showed me the importance of tact and diplomacy which are both very important in life. More and more so as you get older.
What advice would you give the 18-year-old you?
Enjoy it while you can! Don’t procrastinate and always follow your heart.
Is there anyone that you look up to?
Jason Statham. He makes balding sexy.
How would you like to be remembered?
I’d like to be remembered as someone who was Firm yet Fair with a splash of rum.
Have a hidden talent nobody knows about?
Telekinesis.
